Kyu Exam (In-Person)

Event description:
We will have our semester-end rank testing for in-person classes on Monday April 22nd (beginners and white belts) and Wednesday June 24th (green and brown belts). Please let Sensei know if you are not available on those dates and would like to schedule a make-up exam.

Please don’t stress about the test. If you’ve come consistently, you’ll be prepared and we will review it several times before the exam. For beginners, the exam consists of some basic techniques, Takiyoko Shodan, and 5 step sparring.  If you know Takiyoko Shodan very well, you will be asked if you would like to perform Heian Shodan or more to advance further. Generally, at least two people at a time will test, so you won’t be taking the test alone. Those practicing Heian Nidan will be testing for green belt.

Exam fees are as follows and include the certificate, registration with the Japan Karate Association, and color belts if applicable:
  • Beginners and up to green belt [practicing Takiyoku Shodan and/or Heian Shodan]: $20
  • Testing for green belt (6kyu) and up to 4th kyu [practicing Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan]: $30
  • Testing for brown belt (3kyu) and up to 1st kyu [practicing Heian Godan, Tekki Shodan, Bassai Dai]: $40
Exam fees include certificate, registration with the Japan Karate Association, and colored belt if applicable. Fees can be paid by cash, Venmo (Craig Elkin) or Zelle (860-301-1151).
