Karate starts Monday September 7

08/18/2015

Training begins on Labor Day, September 7th.

We will be meeting on Monday/Wednesday 7-8 pm in room 5H on the 5th floor of Payne-Whitney Gym. Following the Mondays class, Dawn and I will be teaching a 6 week self defense class from 8-9 in room J. It is open to everyone.

There are some changes to the karate club that I’m pleased to announce. For the first time, the karate club class will also be a physical education class.  What does that mean? For starters, we have a room already reserved! Secondly, that room will be the basketball court (room 5H) with a nice wood floor.

Additionally, the class/club will be advertised on Yale’s phys Ed class website and brochures which will hopefully result in more students, especially beginners. Lastly, and most importantly, we can now permit those outside the Yale community to participate. There are several people that I know of who can Immediately benefit from this change. It can only result in a stronger club.

I’m very excited for this opportunity. So how does the club interact with the class? We will still have a club president (John Wen), and Yale may potentially pay for any tournament participation, equipment, etc).

Most importantly, you will not pay “club dues” anymore. The only downside to the change is the minor increase in cost. The club has been charging $60 per semester for dues since its inception 20 years ago. That cost per semester increases to $95 for gym members, which is still an incredible bargain for 3 months worth of training. For those who are not gym members, the cost is $155 for the 12 weeks. PLEASE contact me with any concerns regarding family participation or the cost of participation.

That being said, I hope to see you all on September 7th!!
